Boston (dbTechno) - According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), irradiation of fruits and vegetables may be the best way to clean them and make them safe to eat, removing all pathogens. It has proven to be far superior to simply washing fruits and vegetables.
Irradiation takes place when you expose food to electronic beams. These beams blast the food with positive and negative charges, destroying things such as E.coli and salmonella bacteria.
The scientists stated that washing fruits and vegetables is effective and does remove a lot of the risks with bacteria.
To make the food 100% safe though, irradiation is the best route to take.
The scientists also put out the notion that this could reduce the number of food-related illnesses greatly.
14% of foodborne illnesses are linked to fruits and vegetables.
The researchers have presented their findings at the American Chemical Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans.
